Today is the start of a new series of posts titled “Fitness For Beginners”. Hopefully, this series will help the beginner acquire the tools necessary for getting started on their lifelong fitness journey and give the more experienced some insight as well. This is pretty much a summation of my early months of dieting and exercise. Thanks for reading.
About two and a half years ago, I wasn’t happy with my weight, appearance, or activity level. I felt pretty sub par in every health related category, in fact. What’s worse is that I always remember it being this way. I could never look back at a time in my life where I was “in shape”. Despite wanting to get fit, I was ignorant of the effort and steps I needed to take in order to get there. If that sounds familiar, then you are probably in the company of most of America. Losing weight is such a hot topic here. This tells me that we aren’t in denial of our own physical fitness issues, but that most of us simply don’t know where to start.
Know where you are
Well, here it is. The very first step: know where you are. If you are reading this post, then are have probably already done this self examination. You are most likely aware of what needs to change and since you have found my blog, you are most likely intelligent enough to see it through
. The main point here is to not gloss over everything your body is telling you. If you want to be at a healthier place, acknowledge that change is necessary.
Know where you want to be
This applies for everyone. If you’re overweight, know that you have some fat to lose. If you want to gain muscle, know that you will have to strength train. Whatever your starting point and goal, know that it will take hard work. But also know that it isn’t impossible. Everyone’s body is different, but everyone’s is also capable of change.
Resolution
Unlike most New Year’s resolutions that start with good intentions but fail as soon as it gets hard, realize from the start that this will be difficult. Getting in shape will take commitment and work, but if your mind is fully invested and your decision made up then all that’s left is just walking through the motions. If you believe that failure isn’t an option, then for you, it really won’t be.
