Running in the Cold Weather

cold_joggingWith Winter just around the corner, it is getting more and more difficult for us joggers to get around in the cold weather. Depending on where you live, this change in weather could range from slightly irritating to downright bone chilling. If you are a jogger in a similar situation, these quick tips that I have used in the past may help you out.

Gloves - These are absolutely essential. When the temperature gets below 40F my hands simply can’t take the cold air. I have given up after only 1/4 mile before due to not having gloves with me.

Hat – Head coverings are important to keep your body temperature up and to protect your exposed ears. You’ll be surprised at how painful cold wind can be on your ears. I usually prefer a toboggan when my head needs an extra layer.

Layering – Using multiple layers to keep your body warm is a simple and cheap way to keep hypothermia out. At one point last year, I remember counting 14 different articles of clothing on my body. I think I had two hats, three or four shirts and three layers on my legs. I was pretty funny to look at but I definitely felt cozy.

Stay Inside – If the weather is just way too bad you always have the option of using a treadmill indoors. Luckily, my office has a small gym with a few pieces of equipment that I have used many, many times when I just couldn’t brave the elements. It may not be as exciting as jogging on the open road, but you also won’t have to thaw out with 3 cups of hot tea afterward either.

Anyone else have any expert tips on braving the cold? The coldest it gets in my city is about 20F. Surely there must be some extreme ice joggers out there.
