I'm not sure if I would recommend diet sodas to someone at all. Although they seem like a good treat that's almost guilt-free, sweet drinks and foods actually spur the appetite, making it more difficult to control cravings. I think you're better off drinking something with actual sugar in it so that you can benefit from the actual satiety and fullness of having something in your stomach. You're better off giving up carbonated drinks altogether anyway, or at least seriously trimming them back, because carbonation actually affects your lung capacity temporarily!

@Kat Great point! I've never been a big fan of diet sodas and only like to use them in emergency situations. I probably only have 1 diet soda every two months. The artificial ingredients really make me nervous.

Great viewpoint. Although I'm completely against diet sodas in principle, and am full of reasons why artificial sweeteners are terrible, I have to agree that they can be a 'better' choice on certain occasions.

Particularly, as you say, if someone is trying to wean themselves off regular soda. One step at a time ....

I guess it all comes down to acknowledging that we're only human, and can rarely go straight from imperfect to perfect! The only thing I would say is a terrible idea is when people consume liters of diet sodas each day, ever convinced that it's not doing them any harm.

Carcinogens aside, there is plenty of evidence to show that artificial sweeteners spike blood sugar and cause fat storage.
