As you may or may not know, I love Ultimate Frisbee. The game is beautiful for a number of reasons (the emphasis on constant motion and sprinting, the need to skillfully throw and catch a Frisbee, the graceful flight of the disc, etc.) but in a general sense, all organized team sports can have great health benefits. Below are just a few of such reasons why you should join an organized sport club.
Meet People: By signing up to participate in a local sports league, you will be assigned a team. If you decide to commit to the entire season, you will get to know your team very well, no matter what sport you’re playing. Most likely, you will also get a chance to meet some great people. Through my Ultimate league I have met a number of like minded people who are passionate about fitness and the sport and have helped me to develop my own interests as well. It is virtually impossible to actively participate in a sports team and not form some relationships.
Accountability: Also, by being on a sports team, you will have a number of people that are actively counting on your participation. In this way, you will be held accountable to vigorous exercise at least once a week. Knowing that my team will suffer if I’m not there, I always try to make it to every game I can.
It’s Fun: Honestly, the chances I get to play Ultimate with others are some of my favorite times of the week. I covet every chance I get to improve my game because of how much fun I have on the field. Now, if you are new to a sport then it may take a little while to develop a passion for it. But if you find something you genuinely enjoy, and give yourself time to develop your skills, joining an organized sports team can be a fantastic way to fit in some exercise while having a blast.
