Over the weekend I had a difficult run. Even before I got started it seemed the odds were against me. On a day where my training schedule demanded I run 14 miles, the weather was blisteringly cold. On my first attempt, I made it exactly 1/4 mile before I turned around and headed home, frozen and defeated. After a quick regrouping and the adding of additional layers I left the house and returned 14 miles later. Needless to say, gloves can make all the difference in the world.
On my second and successful attempt I was wearing no less than 9 articles of clothing (each and everyone vital):
- Running shoes
- Socks
- Running shorts with lining
- Running pants
- Technical shirt
- Lightweight long sleeve fleece
- Hooded sweatshirt
- Baseball hat
- Gloves
Coincidentally all the outer clothing was the exact same shade of black (including gloves and hat). I asked my wife how much I looked like a burglar on scale from 1 to 10. Her answer: “I’d definitely cross the street if I saw you coming.” I didn’t care. At least I was warm.
