Ibuprofen (otherwise known as Vitamin-I) is virtually one of my best friends now that I’m running 5-6 times a week. This anti-inflammatory drug is great as a pain reliever post-run when I am achy and my muscles are sore. Plus, it is cheap, has few side effects and is an easy to find over-the-counter medication. I generally try to keep some in stock both at my house and office at all times.
I don’t want to come off sounding like some kind of riddled drug addict, but many runners swear by the benefits of this drug in easing the pain after a run. However, like many things, there is some controversy as to when and how to take this medication. I believe the general consensus is to take as needed after a run, not before. If it is taken before hand there may be a slight chance of dehydration, but this shouldn’t be a concern if you are drinking plenty of fluids throughout the race.
Other post-running methods of pain relief include ice, soaking in cold water and simply rest. I recommend these methods if you are averse to using any kind of drugs.
