Marathon Training: Week 6

January 7, 2009 · Comments

Week 6 was a pretty good week for training. The weather here was absolutely great. Unusually warm and overcast days make for some great jogging. I managed to squeeze in all 29 training miles this week relatively easily thanks to the shortened long run of 12 miles. Two months ago, jogging 12 miles would have scared the crap out of me, but now I treat it as a short “long run”. How crazy is that?

A question I’ve been getting alot lately when I tell friends and family that I’m training for a marathon is “Why?”. “Why put your body through that?” or “Why would you want to run a marathon?”. Honestly, I don’t have a simple answer for them. All I can say is that the marathon has always intrigued and frightened me. I guess I’m doing it mostly because I want to prove to myself that I can. This may sound cheesy, but a general rule of thumb I have is that if something scares me, it probably is the thing I need to do. Getting out of my comfort zone has always been a precondition for any personal growth I have experienced. Currently, I’m way out of my comfort zone.

This week’s mileage:

Monday: ultimate frisbee
Tuesday: 4mi
Wednesday: 9mi
Thursday: 5mi
Friday: rest
Saturday: 18mi
Sunday: rest
