This post is full of great advice! Fear can be a very powerful motivator, particularly when it's endured in the name of personal growth. Personally, I'm more frightened by the concept of untapped potential than the possibility of coming up short when pursuing a "stretch" goal. (Pun somewhat intended.)

I really like your suggestion to tell someone about your goal. Asking a confidante or a family member to check in with you on your progress can give you a little extra support and accountability when you need it most. Sometimes that can make all the difference.

As a prospective marathoner, I'm ready to face my fears. (Except for clowns - they still freak me out.)

Thanks for sharing these winning tips!

I love the idea of using your own fears to your advantage, and it's not something you see every day on fitness sites. Nice work on finding a subject so worth writing about, and then doing a great job in making it useful!

I would love to do an Ironman someday. I suspect that scares the crap out of most people :). Congrats on your tri, blake!

I agree with everything you said here. I signed up for an olympic-distance tri and i was scared to death of it. i had only done a few sprint triathlons so this was a lot more to handle. the swim was also an open-water swim, which i had never done before. i trained hard and focused on finishing and i had a fun/successful event. so true...we have to aim high! i'll get up to Ironman someday!
